Delftsblue Upcycle

This project was part of DDW 2022
Ingredients label

By "remastering" an old Delftblue plate, the life of this piece is extended in an innovative and sustainable way. Old Delft blue plates, which normally hang on walls in your grandparents home or stowed away due to change in taste, are now given a second life, and maybe even got more usefull!

The current times also ask us designers to be aware of the materials we use.

With this fact as a starting point I redesign old Delft blue plates. They are often replicas or plates that were produced in large numbers during the 20th century and were in great demand during the heydays of Delft Blue. Everyone knows in their family someone who has a number of Delft blue plates hanging on the wall. However, they do not longer appeal to the imagination and after relocation they are often stored or given away.
For this project, I apply a second layer to those existing plates, shifting the composition and giving it a sign of upcycling, but also immediately updating it: because even the "ingredients" of the pottery are mentioned. In addition, the wall plates are mounted on an earthenware base, so the function changes: from wall plate to fruit bowl or cake stand. Ofcourse with a nod: the craftmanship of upcycling Delftware stands again.
