Tube Light 3 is part of a collection of lamps made from broken, discarded fluorescent tube lights (TL’s). The Tube Light series emerged out of questions surrounding the themes of value and efficiency.
Reinstating Value
The collection of lamps makes use of and highlights the material qualities of the broken TL, an object that has lost its function. Purely functional objects, like these light bulbs, have little value; their value is directly connected to their functional capabilities. So, if a TL breaks, it loses not only its function but also any value people have for it.
By recontextualising these TL’s, in combination with other materials into an object, they regain some sense of value. Bringing focus to the intriguing raw material and form of a TL, rather than the functional service it once provided.
