(Archive) A voice for the Meuse

Rosalie Oomen in collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat

This project was part of DDW 2022

How can we give the Meuse a voice in the political decision- making of Rijkswaterstaat by visualizing data from selected keystone species?

A voice for the Meuse

This TU/e master’s graduation project by Rosalie Oomen has been developed in collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat for the national Programmatic Approach for Great Waters programme (PAGW). PAGW is a visionary approach to create robust and resilient river ecosystems in the Netherlands by 2050.

Oomen builds on Donna J. Haraway's book ‘Staying with the Trouble’. The philosophy Harraway describes is also visible in the international Rights of Nature movement where nature entities like rivers are given a voice to speak for themselves.

Two maps (data visualizations) have been designed to give the Meuse a voice. One map shows important ecological data that define potential places to create more nature to increase biodiversity around the Meuse. The other map shows data from the involved human stakeholders at PAGW. By visualizing these two perspectives next to each other, allows for critical reflection on Rijkswaterstaat’s perspective with the aim of prioritizing nature more. So Rijkswaterstaat, what voice(s) are you going to listen to during the politic
