Scent and Memory

Incense holder and botanical incense stick

“Kaori to Kioku” is a design project based in Japan and the Netherlands.
We connect the worlds of craftwork and scent with the concept of redesigning traditional design.

Japanese ceramic / lacquerware incense holders and botanical incense sticks

The first collection features beautiful ceramic / lacquerware incense holders, some with botanical motifs using 100-year-old moulds and others made with traditional Japanese potter's wheel techniques.

All incense sticks are 100% natural and plant-based. These organic incense sticks are free from petroleum-derived ingredients, synthetic colourants, synthetic dyes, and synthetic perfume.

We are making our incense sticks in the traditional way of a Japanese factory that has been in business for more than 100 years.
Upcycled clay Hanasaka Toseki is the raw material for Kutani ware. This stone can be quarried only in a limited number of mines. That is why we upcycle this precious clay. We are creating the colours of our products from glazes made from raw materials that used to be discarded in the clay-making process.
