Top the world's most vertical and expensive city with the highest life expectancy, the ((Capsule)) showcases actions of Hong Kong, China, in circular design that reflects its unique cityscape, cultural and socio-economic developments such as double aging, urge for inclusivity, and more.

Circular Implies Infinite

As its name tells, the ((Capsule)) is an extremely brief condensation of perspectives from different characters, environments, and social needs, showcasing actions of Hong Kong, China in circular design that reflects its uniquely cityscape, cultural and socio-economic development. The showcase invites the audience to observe the evolving design trends and impacts, raises questions and thoughts, and explores possibilities and opportunities that drawing from the accumulated experiences to manifest how renovated business models and system rethinking by circular design could adapt, overcome, and grow beyond its obstacles and challenges, such as double aging (i.e., coexisting of aging people and aging buildings), high degree of commercialization and consumerism, shortage of land, saturation of landfills, the urge for inclusivity and more.

The 7Rs: Reduce, Repair, Reuse, Recycle, Remake, Redesign & Revitalize

Each of the seven ingredients of the capsule – Reduce, Repair, Reuse, Recycle, Remake, Redesign, and Revitalize, represents different design disciplines under three themes: Consumerism and Waste, Technology and Materials, Sustainability and Inclusivity. This arrangement reflects the development of contemporary circular designs in Hong Kong, China. The showcase explores how each work reflects the city’s continuous growth and its power of innovation and reinvention to increase the potential of materials and/or practices on the topics of sustainable design and inclusivity through products, services, and creative (future) solutions, to ensure the longevity and durability of its culture, skills, knowledge, and resources that can open possibilities for the future of this veritable vertical city.
