Come by for an espresso from 10:00, sit on the chairs, and take your time with twenty years of designs. A 450 m² warehouse studio in the Strijp-S area, with a Forbo linoleum SOUL collection floor, Latvian natural stone and VIJ5 cabinets.

Judge by using

Come by for a coffee from 10:00 and take your time with the work. New projects sit next to designs from the past that are still in production and still developing. Drink an espresso from my own cups, sitting on my chairs and fauteuils, on a Forbo linoleum floor from the new SOUL collection. There is no better way to judge a design than by using it.

The OUTLINE flatware is the clearest example. Designed in 2002, in production for more than twenty years, and this year extended again with a salad set and serving tools. Being able to keep selling a design for two decades is something I am proud of. Alongside it: WAVE glasses, Tripod glasses and plenty of hand-blown coloured glassware, JADE coffee cups.

Every cabinet different

The TUBE cabinets are made to be changed. I design them, VIJ5 publishes them, and in this studio I am using them to experiment: laser-cut aluminium tube carrying natural stone from Pilsakmens in Latvia and CNC-milled shelves. I play with the TUBE cabinets, adjusting the shapes and the possibilities to make them fit many different projects.

For interior architects, that is the point. Dimensions, finish, the stone on top, open or closed, metal or plywood — the system is built to be adapted to a specific interior rather than ordered from a page. Everything is here at 1:1, and I am on site to work out what a project actually needs, from sample to lead time and price.

Sit low

LEGG is a plywood furniture line: low-seated chairs, benches and low tables. Sit in them — that is what they are here for. These are new seats that sit very low, perfect for a cosy corner, for sitting on a carpet, or for a games room.

LEGG is made to be specified. Widths, lengths, the height of a bench, the plywood itself: all of it can be adapted for an interior project, and a bench that runs the length of a wall is a different object from a chair. Ask me about it while you finish your coffee.

Schootsestraat 99, a former warehouse in the Strijp-S area — eight minutes' walk from the Klokgebouw, five minutes from the Natlab. Four-metre ceilings, exposed red brick, 450 m². Open daily, 17–25 October, from 10:00.

About Coffee from 10:00. Shop my Designs till 17:00.

Maarten Baptist is an independent product designer and maker in Eindhoven. For twenty years he has designed cutlery, glassware, tableware and furniture, made with producers in the Netherlands, Czech Republic, India and China and published under his own name and by labels such as VIJ5. Every design starts as a paper sketch. Much of the work stays in production for years — the OUTLINE flatware since 2002 — and is developed further rather than replaced. The studio is a 450 m² warehouse on Strijp-S.
