Floris has built a CNC router that is programmable with CAM software that generates tool paths. By adjusting different parameters it creates countless variations and outcomes. This resulted in a series of candle holders and porcelain lamps. That have unique textures on the surface of the products.
Digital Craft
The CNC router is programmable with CAM software that generates tool paths. By adjusting different parameters it creates countless variations and outcomes. This technique creates beautiful textures and patterns that are unique with this way of making the mold.
CAM Candleholders
The first outcome of this research were the 3 different sizes of candle holders. The fine texture on the ceramic candle holders is created with a small bit that carves out a thin final layer of plaster from the mold. The base of the candle holder starts square and slowly merges in a round circle that emphasizes the candle's shape well.
The small and medium candle holders will fit dinner candles. The large candle holder can be used for tea lights or dinner candles.
CAM Lamps
The molds for the lamps are made with different toolpaths that were created in the CAM software. The CNC machine carfulley routed out each layer of the plaster mold. With high precision and a spinning router bit of 20.000 RPM you can trace back the carves of the router bit.
The lamps are made out of porcelain. When it's fired at a high temperature it makes the lamps translucent. And gives a mesmerizing effect.
