An investigation into the modern-day relationship between social media content and the individuals who consume it, only to be left with overwhelming repetitive nothingness, grappling with the pervasive fear of missing out.
About
Comprised of numerous screen recordings that capture the familiar acts of scrolling, swiping, and popular online imagery, this video installation exists as a chaotic yet skilfully orchestrated mosaic of videos. Beneath the initial allure, however, lies a disquieting sensation. By altering the context through which we perceive media, the work detaches the content from the scrolling experience, shedding light on the vacuity, clamor, and inherent stress of social media. This provokes a fundamental question: are we the consumers of media, or does media consume us?
A poignant exploration of the perils and complexities embedded within our relationship with social media, the work stands as a commentary on the overwhelming nature of digital content and its potential to shape our lives—prompting a deeper introspection on the impact of media consumption on well-being. Advocating for mindful engagement with the digital landscape, the work demands a re-evaluation of our roles as active consumers.
Another layer to it
The video piece can also be viewed from a more personal perspective. The selected videos that are used were gathered from the author's personal digital surroundings - social media feeds, which are significantly influenced by algorithms. This can be interpreted as a self-portrait meticulously crafted by the very algorithms governing social media. Repetitive motions dictated by one's favored social media platform, and a color palette defined by the favored content, shape this unique portrayal.
