This work explores surface design in knitting. Through knit bindings, their texture and yarn colours showcasing their interactions through motives and how the bindings can be the driving force in expression.

Abstract

This work seeks to explore knitted bindings in terms of colour and texture. How do different textures created by different bindings affect the colour used? Can the colours mix? Do they change based on perspective? And how does texture affect colour?

It begins with exploring different knitted textures and how they can influence and interact with motifs, exploring how changing between bindings affects the expression of a motif, for example, can one create depth or focus with those changes and if any technical issues arise. Followed by a deep dive into how yarn colours are affected by textures, if the textures can mix colours or change based on viewing angles, working with floats, transfers and inlay knitted within jacquard.

An exploration into prints and motifs created from a method of painting on folded paper further developed digitally. Creating, in the end, a motif collection of moving forms and structural lines, with the forms looping around the lines allowing interaction and play between the two.

Resulting in a collection revolving around the interaction between the yarn colours and the texture they are knitted as well as the motifs that they create.
