Studio Makkink & Bey’s design is a compost bin toilet where human faeces are caught, and urine and faeces are separated to avoid producing ammonia. It not only saves water, but also provides in reusing human waste, including its many nutrients for the soil.

Do you know that in average an adult person generates about 128 grams of faeces per day?

Therefore 17,8 million Dutch people can generate 836,6 million kg of faeces per year. What if municipalities are able to include collecting human faeces from wheelie bins in the ‘waste’ system to create renewable resources?
Studio Makkink & Bey’s design is a compost bin toilet where human faeces are caught, and urine and faeces are separated to avoid producing ammonia. It not only saves water, but also provides in reusing human waste, including its many nutrients for the soil. It is constructed from a white wheelie bin in which Dutch households separate their waste. On top of the bin is a box that allows you to relieve undisturbed. After your visit you throw ashes or hemp on top to neutralize the odor, covering the faeces and enriching the human manure. The collected urine, drained at the bottom of the chest, can be used for producing electricity for example; the collected materials are also perfectly usable compost for farms or gardens. Of course, human fertilizer needs to be manipulated before you can use it, just like the fertilizer of animals.
