This October, Dutch Design Week joins forces with Catawiki, to program the Contemporary Icons event talk

Dutch Design Week x Catawiki

Catawiki is Europe’s leading online curated marketplace where collectors and enthusiasts can bid on their passion. Catawiki has been working closely within the design community to connect designers with a global online audience. They’ve spearheaded several initiatives to support emerging designers and partnered with a number of design fairs, including OBJECT Rotterdam and Design Open. Dutch Design Week and Catawiki both play distinctly different roles within the design community. While Dutch Design Week provides offline visibility with deep inroads and a long history of creating a dedicated space for designers, Catawiki’s online platform gives designers easy access to a global audience and a wide customer base. Through this partnership, both companies hope to strengthen the connection between buyer and seller, designer and collector, online and offline.

DDW Talk: Contemporary Icons

For Contemporary Icons, Catawiki will facilitate a live discussion, and curate an online auction showcasing several pieces by DDW designers. The exclusive Dutch Design Week auction contains an eclectic mix of contemporary design objects from a strong selection of designers such as Alissa+Nienke, Visser & Meijwaard, Kiki van Eijk, Ontwerpduo, and many more. The discussion will be moderated by Evelien Reich, Editor-in-Chief at ELLE Decoration NL, and chair expert panel young designer Dutch Design Awards, and will explore the intersections of design with art and history, trends in contemporary collecting, and the business behind the collectible design market. The line-up of speakers will include contemporary designers and collectors, as well as speakers from Catawiki on the business of selling and buying on the art and design market.

The panel of speakers includes:

Frank Engel and Federica van Adrichem, Catawiki - Catawiki is Europe’s most-visited online platform for special objects selected by experts. Frank and Federica - whose work focuses on Art & Antiques, and Applied Art & Design, respectively - will explain the dynamics of buying and selling online and how those dynamics have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nadine van den Bosch, Young Collectors Circle (YCC) - Young Collectors Circle aims to inspire a new generation of art collectors. Through masterclasses, guided tours, and various festivals, YCC works to sustain the art world by making it more accessible to new buyers and collectors. Nadine offers her perspective, not only as co-founder of YCC, but also as a collector.

Tineke Beunders and Nathan Wierink, Ontwerpduo - Eindhoven-based design duo Ontwerpduo has a mission to take fairy-tale ideas and translate them into functional designs. Together, they will discuss the impact of the pandemic on their way of working, and the story of their practice with recent works: ‘During Dutch Design Week we show the inspiration behind our beautiful light fixtures and designs—from sketching, drawing, sawing, welding and soldering. We show how these processes all come together in one final design.’

The DDW Talk takes place at Fifth, The Stage, on 21 October from 09:30 to 14:00. The Contemporary Icons auction will be live 15-24 October on Catawiki.com.
