Rollo / Kinetic Canvases

The Art of Pattern Dynamics. Accessible and Sustainable.

Overview of the kinetic canvases.

Project Rollo consists of kinetic artworks by Studio 101010 with calm yet mesmerizing aesthetics and meaningful concepts. The kinetic canvases aim to bring kinetic art to homes and semi-public spaces, providing intuitive insights into complex systems, with a strong commitment to sustainability.

The Art of Pattern Dynamics

Studio 101010 develops kinetic artworks that blend art, design, and science. The resulting dynamic canvases invite audiences to witness the gradual transformation of simple patterns and their intriguing relationships on the canvas as a whole and over extended periods. Besides the mesmerizing aesthetics, the visuals provide intuitive access to deeper concepts. Based on basic physics models of complex systems, the patterns can vary from disorder to complete cohesion. Direct quasi-analog controls allow adjustment of model parameters influencing complexity and speed of the pattern dynamics. This not only enables a personalized experience but also a systematic exploration of the rich patterns between these extremes. The dynamic patterns and their different phases offer room for various interpretations within the context of natural and societal systems, and the human condition itself. The choice of materials emphasizes the interplay between structures on different scales. The artworks serve as a retreat from the fast-paced digital environment and encourage us to take a step back and alleviate the fear of the world's complexity.

Accessibility and Sustainability

Most kinetic art installations are designed for either events or exhibitions with only limited time to engage with the artwork. As a result, artworks tend to be visually overwhelming and do not provide enough room and time for deeper concepts. On top, practical aspects usually render kinetic artworks unsuitable for use in common private homes.
With Project Rollo, Studio 101010 has set itself the goal to design artworks for homes and semi-public spaces with manufacturing methods suitable for production in small series, bringing down manufacturing costs. The physical products also use either recycled or recyclable materials and are designed with durability, repairability, and fool-proofness in mind making them accessible to a wider audience.
